Last year, february to july 2008, I did an internship at public broadcasting TV-station BNN, which focuses it’s programming on young people, typically aged between 15 and 30 years old . The department I did my internship for is called 101TV, which is a digital television channel (accessible via a decoder / settop box), that also offers it’s content on-demand online via www.101.tv. Typical for 101TV is the concept of ‘bit-sized television’ which means that every program the channel broadcasts doesn’t take longer than 5 minutes, like the channel is already zapping for you. 101TV makes these 5-minute max items in-house, and that’s what I did during my internship (producing, directing, shooting and editing video-items). The items subjects vary greatly, as long as it’s interesting television for the target audience, which is slightly younger than that of BNN. After my internship I continued working for 101TV on a freelance basis.
This February I started with my research project at the CrossmediaLab. My graduation project revolves around 101TV as well, as I am researching the possibilities of User-generated content (UGC) for them. There’s been a desire to somehow make use of UGC for quite sometime now, but 101TV is still searching for a fitting form. So when I asked what I could research for them (we kind of agreed that I’d do my graduation project there as well) they came up with this idea. My research consists of two parts; first I’m going to thoroughly study the concept of UGC, what does it mean, how is it used, what are possibilities, how do you encourage users to contribute, etc. Secondly, I’ll have an in-depth look at 101TV and it’s characteristics. I’ll apply my collected knowledge on them to come up with one or more useful concepts. I’ve been working on this project since february 9th and plan to finish somewhere around the 3rd of july. If all goes well and they like what I did, chances are pretty solid they’ll implement it on their website and/or television channel, so that’s pretty exciting.
