Concepting, prototyping and field-test as interactive research method. The Museumbattle is a five day pressure-cooking concepting event for students with different backgrounds (economic studies, creative studies, communication studies and technical studies). In total we will organize four Museumbattles during our two-year Museum Compass project (www.museumkompas.nl).
The first was held in September 2011.During these 5 days students, coached by teachers and researchers of the crossmedialab, develop a cross media concept for museums, archives or other cultural heritage institutes, and present their concept to a jury of experts at the end of the week. The jury decides on a winning concept, which is developed further. This competitive approach has already delivered creative cross media concepts for actual real life cases last September. The next battle will be held in February 2012 (6-10 February).
But the Museumbattle is more than just a pressure-cooker for concepts. The Museumbattle is the first stage of a cycle in the Museum Compass project on the use of cross media in cultural heritage institutions. Organised as a participatory research program, it supports museums in making informed choices on the use of cross media, their visitors’ changing expectations, and the growing need for control and transparency under the influence of tightening budgets and increasing demands for public accountability. The two-year project aims to balance specific and concrete interventions (explorative research) with the development of generic knowledge (theory and models). Its planning is based on repeated cycles of concepting, prototyping, field test and evaluation which helps in spreading knowledge and experience among participating parties.
