Thursday the 21st of April the Crossmedialab hosted the 3th Somere Social Media afternoon at the University of Applied Sciences Utrecht. Somere stands for Social Media Reseach. Somere focuses on investigating the design, implementation, usage and effects of social media. It ranges from young people and marketing to internal corporate communications. Its main roots are at the University of Twente and a lot of students from the University of Twente doing a thesis on social media participate in Somer. Also companies such as Sogeti and the University of Applied Sciences Utrecht participate within Somere.
In the morning there was a meeting between the Somere members and students discussing the social media field and exploring the option to publish a book entitles Social Media Studies bundling the current research done by students from the University of Twente and the University of Applied Sciences Utrecht (Crossmedialab).
The afternoon was open to anyone and I was positively suprised with the amount of people interested. Around 50 people, ranging from students, lecturers and (media) companies based in Utrecht. Harry van Vliet was the first speaker introducing the Crossmedialab followed by Sjoerd de Vries who introduced Somere. After the two introductions the official programme could start. Efthymios Constantinides (University of Twente) discussed social media in marketing. His point of view was that social media could be a thread for marketing. Jolien Klazinga, who graduated on sharing knowledge in competitive organisations: social media, a part of the solution shared her experiences at Sanoma Uitgevers. Peter Riezebos gave great insight in the usage of social media during election time.
After a short coffee break Andé le Cat from ABN AMRO pitched the social platform they were building for usage within the ABN AMRO intranet. Efthymios, Jolien and Peter were asked to act as the jury from the television show. It was their task, as experts, to ask difficult questions and decide if they would invest in this case. They all did. I also got a chance to present the I Know What This Is project but the pitch didn’t turn out as great as I hoped. I suffer from a nasty habit of putting too much slides in a presentation knowing that there is little time to go through the slides. Luckily for me Efthymios, Jolien and Peter were nice enough to invest in the project.
